Cost and compare

Assisted living vs memory care

Two different services. One decision. Here is the plain difference.

You don't pay. There's no fee.

Side by side, in plain words

  • Assisted living: help with daily activities, more independence, standard building access.
  • Memory care: dementia-capable staffing, secured floors or exits, structured programming.
  • Assisted living apartments are usually larger. Memory care rooms are often smaller with more shared space.
  • Staffing ratios and night coverage are usually higher in memory care.

Who each one fits

Assisted living fits a parent who needs a hand with bathing, dressing, or medications and can still find their way around a building safely.

Memory care fits a parent whose confusion, exit seeking, or night wandering makes an unsecured building unsafe. We do not diagnose. Your parent's doctor does.

If you are leaning toward assisted living, our assisted living placement service sends a written shortlist. If a move may not be needed yet, read home care or assisted living?

Cost honesty

Assisted living side: According to CareScout's 2025 Cost of Care Survey (PDF 282102), the New Jersey median monthly cost for assisted living was $8,710. The national assisted living median in that survey was $6,200. Your parent's quote from any community can be higher or lower based on location, apartment type, and care level. We do not invent a price for any named community.

Memory care side: there is no official statewide memory care median that we will publish. Ask each community, and we help you compare on a call.

How we handle your information

Frequently asked questions

Can a community move my parent from assisted living to memory care?
Many buildings have both and can move a resident when care needs change. Ask what triggers that move and what it costs.
Which one costs more?
Memory care usually costs more because of staffing and security. We do not publish a memory care median.
How do we decide?
Sit with us and describe the last two weeks at home. We help you sort the housing question. The doctor confirms the medical picture.
