Using life insurance to help pay for senior care

A policy can sometimes fund care while a parent is still living. It depends entirely on the policy.

You don't pay. There's no fee.

Why families ask about this

A family is short on monthly funds for care, and the one asset nobody thought about is a life insurance policy. Depending on the type and the terms, some of that value may be reachable while the insured is living.

We are a placement and referral guide. We do not sell, broker, or buy policies, we take no commission on them, and nothing here is insurance or tax advice. We explain the paths so you can ask a licensed specialist the right question.

The paths that exist

  • Accelerated or living benefit riders, which may release part of the death benefit under defined health conditions.
  • Long term care or chronic illness riders attached to some newer policies.
  • Cash value in a permanent policy, reachable by withdrawal or loan, with consequences for the policy.
  • A life settlement, selling a policy to a third party, which is regulated differently in each state.
  • Surrendering a policy for its cash value, usually the last option to consider.

What to check before anyone acts

  • Policy type. Term policies usually have no cash value to reach.
  • Which riders are actually on the contract, in writing.
  • Tax consequences, which a CPA should review, not us.
  • Effects on Medicaid eligibility, where proceeds can count as assets or income.
  • Who the beneficiaries are, and whether the family agrees on the plan.
  • Whether the person holds legal authority to act, such as power of attorney.

Who we send you to

Depending on the question, the right person is a licensed insurance professional, an elder law attorney, or a tax advisor. We make introductions and stay in the housing lane ourselves.

We publish no returns, payout estimates, or percentages on this page. Anyone promising a specific number before reading the contract is guessing.

Ask us about funding care

Please do not type Social Security numbers, Medicare numbers, bank details, or medication lists.

What does your parent need help with? Check all that apply.
We never pass your details to a community or partner without asking you first and naming who receives them. We only contact you the way you choose. You don't pay. There's no fee.

How we handle your information

Frequently asked questions

Do you sell or buy life insurance policies?
No. We sell nothing and earn nothing from any policy transaction. We refer families to licensed specialists.
Can a term policy pay for care?
Usually not, because term policies generally carry no cash value. Some carry riders, so the contract has to be read.
Could this affect Medicaid eligibility?
It can. Proceeds may count as assets or income, which is why an elder law attorney should review the plan before anyone acts.
