Hearing aids: what to sort out before you shop

Hearing loss is common and treatable, and the shopping part is confusing on purpose. Here is the plain version.

We may earn a commission if you purchase through links on this page. It never changes what you pay.

Three ways people buy

Over the counter devices

Sold directly to adults who feel their hearing loss is mild to moderate. You set them up yourself, often with a phone app. Best for someone comfortable with a little trial and error.

Prescription hearing aids

Fitted by an audiologist after a hearing test, then adjusted over follow up visits. Best for more significant loss, uneven loss between ears, or anyone who wants hands on support.

Service based brands

Companies that pair a device with remote or in network professional support. Convenient, though what is included in support varies quite a bit.

Brands people ask us about

hear.com

A hearing aid service that connects people with local providers and prescription devices, with remote support during the trial period. Research only mention here: we do not sell it and we do not quote a price. Confirm current pricing, trial length, and return terms on the official site.

Listing a brand is not an endorsement or a ranking. We publish no star ratings, no customer quotes, and no prices.

Who over the counter hearing aids are NOT for

See a doctor or a licensed audiologist first if any of these apply.

  • Hearing loss that came on suddenly or over a few days
  • Ear pain, fluid, drainage, or a history of ear surgery
  • Ringing or hearing loss in only one ear
  • Dizziness or balance problems along with hearing changes
  • Severe or profound hearing loss, which usually needs professional fitting
  • Someone who cannot manage tiny batteries, domes, or a phone app without help
